            physicists are feverishly competing in the next space race.=20
            <BR><BR>They are not aiming for the heavens. Instead, these=20
            scientists are scrambling to see <!-- ##alsosee## -->

            within some other realm, one that boasts a lot more legroom. =
Such a=20
            hidden "megaverse" would encompass four or more dimensions =
of space,=20
            making our 3-D world look positively cramped by comparison.=20
            <BR><BR>A trio of theorists put forth the idea of these =
large extra=20
            dimensions two years ago, to initially skeptical colleagues. =
Since=20
            then, the hypothesis has won the hearts of many researchers =
by=20
            offering a solution to one of the most frustrating problems =
in=20
            modern physics -- how to put gravity on equal footing with =
nature's=20
            other fundamental forces. The theory also could explain dark =
matter,=20
            the mysterious stuff that adds heft to our universe but =
cannot be=20
            seen. <BR><BR>"If this idea is true, it would be one of the =
major=20
            breakthroughs of the human mind," says Greg Landsberg, an =
assistant=20
            professor of physics at Brown University. "It would probably =
be the=20
            biggest step since we discovered quantum mechanics -- or =
since=20
            humanity understood that the earth is not flat." <BR><BR>The =
new=20
            scenario has brought together groups of physicists who had =
grown=20
            estranged from one another of late. "I think it's been an =
extremely=20
            healthy thing for physics," says Eric G. Adelberger, a =
professor of=20
            physics at the University of Washington. "When it was =
suddenly=20
            realized that now there is a whole new possibility of all =
kinds of=20
            interesting things happening, it was like a dam breaking. It =

            energized people's imaginations." <BR><BR>The concept of =
extra=20
            dimensions actually has a long pedigree in physics, going =
back to=20
            the 1920's. In recent years, string theory -- the current =
darling of=20
            theoretical physicists -- carried this idea further, =
suggesting six=20
            or seven additional dimensions beyond the three we inhabit.=20
            According to this theory, all matter and forces are made of=20
            minuscule vibrating strings, which can spread throughout the =
corners=20
            of higher-dimensional space. <BR><BR>String theory, however, =

            frustrates physicists who conduct experiments. The extra =
dimensions=20
            central to the theory are so tiny that researchers have no =
hope of=20
            ever detecting them. Each dimension is thought to curl up =
into a=20
            pocket of space about 10<SUP>-33</SUP> centimeters across, =
far too=20
            small for even the most powerful particle accelerators to =
probe. To=20
            get a sense of how small that is, imagine enlarging one of =
the=20
            theoretical dimensions to the size of a person. At that=20
            magnification, each of our atoms would swell to roughly the =
size of=20
            the known universe. <BR><BR>In 1998, the three theorists =
took the=20
            stringy extra space and stretched it out. They proposed that =
two of=20
            the additional dimensions could be as large as a millimeter =
across=20
            -- about the thickness of a dime. That size -- colossal in=20
            comparison to the string dimensions -- would be something =
that=20
            experimental physicists could detect, says Nima =
Arkani-Hamed, of the=20
            University of California at Berkeley, who developed the new =
theory=20
            with Savas Dimopoulos, of Stanford University, and Gia =
Dvali, of New=20
            York University. <BR><BR>Mr. Arkani-Hamed, who just turned =
28, has=20
            spent much of the past two years on tour, presenting the =
concept to=20
            rapt colleagues at universities around the world. He most =
recently=20
            discussed the implications of the theory this month, at a =
meeting of=20
            the American Physical Society in Long Beach, Calif. =
<BR><BR>During=20
            the conference, the Berkeley physicist, sporting black =
pants, a=20
            baggy black shirt, and a long black ponytail, described the =
new=20
            concept and happily acknowledged that it sounds outlandish. =
He=20
            seemed tickled by the way it toys with the standard view of =
physics.=20
            <BR><BR>"The remarkable thing is, you would think that =
something we=20
            already know about the world would destroy this idea. But we =
did a=20
            really systematic investigation of this, and actually =
nothing kills=20
            this idea," he says. Having examined how the scenario =
squares with=20
            other scientists' experimental observations, he adds, "it =
shows you=20
            in some sense how little we know of the world, that this=20
            crazy-seeming idea is possible." <BR><BR>Mr. Arkani-Hamed =
and his=20
            colleagues delved into the possibility of extra dimensions =
in hope=20
            of rescuing gravity. <BR><BR>The problem with gravity is =
that it's=20
            such a lightweight compared to nature's three other =
fundamental=20
            forces: the strong force, which binds protons and neutrons =
together=20
            in atomic nuclei; the weak force, which governs radioactive =
decay;=20
            and the force of electricity and magnetism, which are alter =
egos.=20
            The enormous mismatch between those other forces and gravity =
creates=20
            theoretical complications and is unpalatable to physicists, =
who=20
            normally prefer simple, elegant solutions. <BR><BR>As an=20
            illustration of gravity's puniness, Mr. Arkani-Hamed notes =
that a=20
            refrigerator magnet can easily pluck a needle off a table. =
"The=20
            entire mass of the earth pulling down on this needle is not =
enough=20
            to overcome the force of this magnet," he says. =
<BR><BR>According to=20
            Newton's laws, the gravitational tug between two objects =
grows as=20
            they get closer. So, as distance shrinks, gravity gains in =
strength=20
            compared with the other forces. But calculations suggest =
that this=20
            reconciliation happens only at the tiny scale of the =
theoretical=20
            strings -- 10<SUP>-33</SUP> centimeters. The other three =
forces are=20
            roughly equal at 10<SUP>-17</SUP> centimeters, more than a =
million=20
            billion times as large as the size of the space where =
gravity=20
            catches up. <BR><BR>This situation profoundly bothers =
physicists. It=20
            means that strings and the fundamental nature of gravity can =
never=20

            this problem by proposing that the imbalance between the =
forces is a=20
            mirage. Gravity only seems to be weak, they hypothesized, =

            most of it spreads out into extra dimensions, diluting its =
strength=20
            in our universe. <BR><BR>In that scenario, the rest of the =
forces=20
            and all of matter remain trapped in the familiar 3-D world, =
while=20
            gravity roams through higher-dimensional space. Their idea =
draws on=20
            recent thinking by string theorists, who said matter and =
energy can=20
            be confined to surfaces called "branes." The easiest brane =
to=20
            imagine is a two-dimensional membrane stretched out like a =
sheet.=20
            Although they are harder to visualize, higher-dimensional =
branes are=20
            also possible, according to this theory. <BR><BR>To help =
explain the=20
            extra-dimension theory, Mr. Arkani-Hamed uses the analogy of =

            billiard balls on a pool table. The balls cannot roll =
vertically;=20
            they must remain on the table's two-dimensional brane. But=20
            occasionally the balls knock together and produce sound, =
which fills=20
            our full, three-dimensional space. <BR><BR>By extension, all =
of the=20
            particles that make up our universe are fixed to a 3-D =
brane, while=20
            gravity diffuses into other dimensions as well. "The reason =
we can't=20
            actually see into these extra dimensions is that light can't =
go=20
            there," says Mr. Arkani-Hamed. "Light and all the other =
particles=20
            are stuck to this brane." <BR><BR>"As soon as you start =
thinking=20
            this way, there could be a world of possibilities opening =
up," he=20
            says. "For example, we don't need to be alone. There could =
be other=20
            universes out there. These would literally be parallel =
universes.=20
            They're universes no more than a millimeter removed from us, =
but=20
            parallel to us, and we can't interact with them in any way =
other=20
            than through gravity." <BR><BR>Going back to the pool-table =
analogy,=20
            that would be like having several tables stacked on top of =
each=20
            other. The balls on one table couldn't touch balls on =
another table.=20
            Only sound could move from one to the other. <BR><BR>Such a =
scenario=20
            could help explain why the universe appears to hold more =
matter than=20
            scientists can detect, says Mr. Arkani-Hamed. The so-called =
dark=20
            matter might be ordinary stars and galaxies within a =
parallel=20
            universe. The light from these objects could not reach our =
universe,=20
            but the gravity would, giving astrophysicists the false =
sense that=20
            some mysterious mass lurks out in the cosmos. =
<BR><BR>Likewise, the=20
            extra dimensions could offer ways to understand the ghostly=20
            particles called neutrinos, and to make sense of the strange =

            repulsive force known as the cosmological constant, he says. =
"This=20
            new theory opens up a plethora of possibilities for actually =

            discovering the underlying theory that makes everything =
tick."=20
            <BR><BR>In fact, a bumper crop of related hypotheses have =
sprouted=20
            in the past two years. In 1999, Lisa Randall, a professor at =

            Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of =
Technology,=20
            and Raman Sundrum, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford, =
proposed=20
            that Einstein's equations of general relativity permit an =
extra=20
            dimension that is infinite in extent, rather than one curled =
up to a=20
            millimeter in size, as Mr. Arkani-Hamed and his colleagues =
have=20
            proposed. If that dimension were infinite, gravity would =
reside=20
            mostly on another brane. Only a little of its energy would =
reach=20
            into our 3-D brane. <BR><BR>"That is a radical revision of =
what the=20
            background gravity looks like," says Ms. Randall. "You would =
want to=20
            go back and rethink general relativity and cosmology, and =
even what=20
            stars look like." <BR><BR>Given the power of these ideas,=20
            researchers are eager to see if they are even remotely =
accurate.=20
            <BR><BR>"I think it's important to point out that these =
scenarios=20
            may well not be realized in nature," warns Steven B. =
Giddings, a=20
            professor of physics at the University of California at =
Santa=20
            Barbara. <BR><BR>Proof for or against the existence of large =

            additional dimensions could come soon. According to a =
newsletter=20
            circulated among gravity researchers, more than a half-dozen =

            laboratory experiments are currently looking for hints of =
brawnier=20
            gravity, which should manifest itself at distances of less =
than a=20
            millimeter. And that tally includes only the groups willing =
to go=20
            public, says Riley Newman, of the University of California =
at=20
            Irvine, who made the inventory. He says there are =
"undoubtedly"=20
            other submillimeter-force experiments now underway or =
planned.=20
            <BR><BR>At the recent meeting in Long Beach, physicists from =
the=20
            University of Washington described their results using an =
extremely=20
            sensitive balance. In the device, several disks are stacked =
atop=20
            each other, separated by fractions of a millimeter. By =
detecting the=20
            tugs between pairs of disks, the group has made the most =
sensitive=20
            known measurements of gravity at short distances, reported =
Mr.=20
            Adelberger, one of the researchers. <BR><BR>In fact, the =
physics=20
            world is buzzing with rumors that the Washington team found =
some=20
            deviations from expected gravity. Mr. Adelberger refused to =
comment=20
            on any unusual findings, except to say that he and his =
colleagues=20
            are carefully checking their results. They are also =
modifying their=20
            setup to reduce any vibrations that wiggle the instrument, =
enabling=20
            them to place the disks even closer together. <BR><BR>At the =
other=20
            end of the spectrum from Washington's tabletop experiments,=20
            researchers at Fermilab, in Batavia, Ill., near Chicago, are =
probing=20
            for signs of extra dimensions by examining the most =
energetic=20
            man-made collisions on earth. They are slamming protons and=20
            antiprotons together at velocities near the speed of light.=20
            <BR><BR>Such experiments might be able to determine if large =
extra=20
            dimensions do exist, says Brown's Mr. Landsberg, who =
conducts=20
            research at the lab. In some cases, key evidence could =
emerge in the=20
            form of missing energy. While most of the debris from the =
collisions=20
            would register in the collider's detectors, the crash would =
also=20
            produce gravitational particles that could escape into the =
extra=20
            dimensions. From the perspective of our universe, it would =
seem that=20
            some energy had vanished. <BR><BR>Mr. Landsberg and his =
colleagues=20
            have found no clear evidence of such disappearances, but =
next year=20
            they plan to run an experiment that will generate 200 times =
the=20
            amount of data collected in previous studies. If nothing =
appears in=20
            those tests, an even more powerful accelerator at Geneva's =
European=20
            Laboratory for Particle Physics, known as CERN, might =
produce some=20
            answers when it goes on line in 2005. <BR><BR>In the past,=20
            experimental physicists had felt shut off from the theorists =
who=20
            explore string theory, because there was no way to test the =
idea.=20
            But the possibilities of large extra dimensions have zapped =
newfound=20
            energy into the collider community. "In effect, we have =
found the=20
            connection from string theory to the ground on which we are =
all=20
            standing, to the things we can observe and test," says Mr.=20
            Landsberg. <BR><BR>Mr. Arkani-Hamed seems delighted with the =

            interest that the new theory has generated. "What's fun is =
that it's=20
            all testable. So I will know in a 10-year time scale if this =
is all=20
            fantasy or reality. That's gratifying, because I'd like to =
know if=20
            I'm right or wrong before I'm dead." <BR><BR>Even if the =
theory of=20
            large extra dimensions eventually collapses, physicists will =
still=20
            view it as a positive contribution, says Mr. Adelberger. "I =
would be=20
            surprised if it hasn't changed people's way of thinking =
about=20
