Level 1 Trigger
Muon Trigger Manager How-To
A brief description of how to interact with the MTM system.
- log on to d0ol08.
- setup d0online.
- setup onl_apps.
- in /projects/l1muo/VxWorks/current, execute vxworks ('./vxworks &').
This brings up the Level 1 Muon GUI. The SciFi Level 1 MTM is processor d0olmuo39.
- Generic IOC code sits in /online/ioc/m68k/mv162/d0olmuo39
- To set up the MTM, execute /projects/l1muo/vxstuff/setup-ctm .
- MTT instructions (from Rob):
To use the MTT, try (from the gui command window):
cd /projects/l1muo/vxstuff
>setup-ctm
This will setup the MTT. You can now use a couple of functions...type
these in the VxWorks Command window:
clearfifo ! empties the receiver fifo
sr1dump 32 ! reads and dumps 32 words from the fifo SR1. You can use
any multiple of 8 for the count. SR1 is Serial Receiver 1
and is the top BNC connection on the MTT front panel.
You should plug the cable in here.

The SciFi (CTT/CPS/FPS) Muon Trigger Manager (MTM) and Muon Readout
Card/Crate (MRC) system
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
2001-1-4: updated/corrected (*** changes marked ***)
2000-12-7: wisdom collected from Rob McCroskey (robmcc@fnal.gov)
and Tom Diehl (diehl@fnal.gov) by Stefan Gruenendahl
overview:
2 crates, + 2 patch panels:
crate # 1: Muon Trigger Manager crate in PW03 (platform west, rack 03)
crate # 2: *** Muon Readout Crate in MCH322-2; Moveable Counting House,
3rd floor; see note 1) ***
patch panels: PN06 and MCH325 (platform north, and (outside of) Moveable
Counting House)
cables:
50-conductor twist-and-flat (T/F)
40-conductor T/F
4 and 8 wide 'data' cables (grey, have 8 and 16 pin plugs, respectively)
1553 cables (blue)
(shielded) Ethernet cables
VBD - VRC cable
details:
crate #1 modules and their cables (MTM crate):
slot 0: MVM CPU; cable: shielded (!) ethernet to nearest hub
slot 1: Manager card; cables:
4-wide data cable to PN06 patch panel; from there via 24-wide
cable to MCH325; from there as 8-wide to MRC (note 2) in MCH322-2;
purpose: receive timing (RF),
send L2/L3 information (i.e. this is the 'readout cable').
[TD] (note 3)
50 wide T/F cable to PN06 ; from there to MRC. purpose:
receive trigger decision, crossing number.
1553 cable [TD]
slot n: *** three Trigger Manager (TM) cards, two for CFT/CPS, one for FPS
***
for each TM:
*** two 40 wide T/F to L1 framework patch panel above framework
racks on MCH floor 1
--> consult Dan Edmunds for plugging in; Rick Hance (?) for
correct route determination;
Manuel Martin for trigger timing issues related to cable
length
(probably not an issue). purpose: send trigger terms to L1
framework. ***
crate #2 modules and cables (MCH readout crate):
slot 0: MVM CPU: ethernet to nearest hub
slot 2: VBD : cable to VRC --> Sean Mattingly. purpose: readout to L3.
slot 3: VBD terminator ?
slot 7: muon fanout card. SCL cables, incl. black coax and narrow (10-wide
?) T/F [TD]
slot 8: MRC Muon Readout Card:
8-wide data cable to MCH225. purpose: data from MTM. Might be
in floor already.
50-wide T/F jumper cable to long cable in floor (--> Tom
Marshall); long cable runs via patch panel PN06 to
MTM crate manager card.
For making the patch panel connections in PN06 see Tom Diehl.
Path from PW03 to PN06:
east from PW03, under beam; north immediately after beam; through hole in
east-west wall into PN area, back down
into floor, and east to 'bin' (grey box with hinged top lid); north in
'bin', then west to PN06.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
notes:
1) *** crate numbers in a rack start with 0 (top crate) ***
2) in this document MRC refers to a particular module (the MRC module) in
the Muon Readout Crate,
not the crate as a whole.
3) [TD] : cable has been put in already by Tom Diehl.

cable details:
cable email: (50 wide from PW03-MTMC (slot 1) to MCH321-2 slot 8)
...
Rob and I confirmed ... that the 50-wide T/F 20336 is
indeed bad on pair 1 and 21, and 20415 is open on pair 1.
I couldn't find another good cable, so I reversed the orientation of
cable 20415 (pair 1 <-> pair 25) both at PN06 and behind MCH31x,
and taped and labelled the connections to the jumper cables at both ends
of the long haul cable. The jumper cables thus have standard polarity
and keying at PW03 and MCH321. Pair 25 is bad, but that shouldn't matter.
We should have all our muon readout cables in place.
