CTT Architecture and Mnemonics

The Collector/Broadcaster (C/B) is the subsystem of the new DØ Trigger that collects and filters data from the Central Fiber Tracker (CFT) and the PreShower (PS) and broadcast it to the L1 Framework, L2 pre-processors and L3. The proper behavior of the C/B is crucial for the overall success of the DØ experiment. Specifically, if the filtering is not implemented correctly DØ is in jeopardy.

The complexity of the C/B is patent in the general diagram shown here. This group is responsible for all pieces of the puzzle (hardware, algorithms, communication and firmware) except for the grayed out area.

GLOSARY of TERMS used by the COLLECTOR/BROADCASTER Hardware

  • MB
    • Mother Board, PC board designed to carry common hardware: I/O and Daughter boards. This is a functional building block of the C/B system.
  • DB
    • Daughter Board, PC board designed to serve as holder of a number of FPGAs. The type and programming of these FPGAs defines the functionality of the DB.
  • TC
    • Transition Card, PC board designed to hold the output buses and especial hardware for the buses interface.
  • AFE-
    • Prefix used to indicate the Analog Front End boards
  • DFE-
    • Prefix used to indicate the Digital Front End boards
  • COL-
    • Prefix used to indicate the Collector boards
  • BC-
    • Prefix used to indicate the Broadcaster boards
  • TM-
    • Prefix used to indicate the Trigger Manger boards. These boards are designed by the µ-Trigger group.
  • CFT
    • Indicates the Central Fiber Tracker. It is used by itself or as a suffix to the prefixes AFE- and DFE- to fully identify a particular board. When necessary, an A (for Axial) or an S (for Stereo) is appended to it.
  • CPS
    • Indicates the Central PreShower. It is used by itself or as a suffix to the prefixes AFE- and DFE- to fully identify a particular board. When necessary, an A (for Axial) or an S (for Stereo) is appended to it.
  • FPS
    • Indicates the Forward PreShower.
  • CTOC
    • Suffix to identify a board serving an Octant of the Central Axial Fiber Tracker and the Central Axial PreShower. The complete mnemonics for these boards is COL-CTOC although often they will be identified by the suffix only.
  • CTQD
    • Suffix to identify a board serving a Quadrant of the Central Axial Fiber Tracker and the Central Axial PreShower. The complete mnemonics for these boards is BC-CTQD although often they will be identified by the suffix only.
  • STOV
    • Suffix to identify a board serving an Overlay Region of the Central Axial Fiber Tracker created to map the 80 sectors of the CFT into the Sextants of the Silicon Tracker. The complete mnemonics for these boards is COL-STOV although often they will be identified by the suffix only.
  • STSX
    • Suffix to identify a board creating a logical Sextant of the 80 Sectors of the CFT. The complete mnemonics for these boards is BC-STSX although often they will be identified by the suffix only.
  • CPSS
    • Suffix to identify a board of the Central PreShower Stereo system. Its complete identification is BC-CPSS.
  • FPSS
    • Suffix to identify a board of the Forward PreShower Stereo system. Its complete identification is COL-FPSS.
  • CTTT
    • Suffix to identify a Collector Board dedicated to the creation of all possible AND/OR terms used in the L1 CFT/CPS Axial Trigger. The complete mnemonics is COL-CTTT.
  • FPTT
    • Suffix to identify a Collector Board dedicated to the creation of all possible AND/OR terms used in the L1 FPS Trigger. The complete mnemonics is COL-FPTT.
